Bats in the Attic was conceived alongside CorrosionFest but with a different musical focus. While CorrosionFest explores the wider dark alternative scene, Bats in the Attic is dedicated to contemporary gothic rock, post-punk, darkwave and deathrock.
The original festival was planned for 2020 but, like so many events, was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bats in the Attic finally launched in 2022 as a two-day festival, providing a dedicated platform for artists shaping the future of the contemporary goth scene.
Around half of every Bats in the Attic lineup is likely to feature artists that many people have not yet discovered. Searching for those bands has become one of the festival’s defining characteristics, introducing audiences to exciting artists from across the UK, Europe and further afield alongside more familiar names.
Like CorrosionFest, Bats in the Attic has developed strong European connections, regularly featuring artists from Germany, Sweden, Italy, Belgium and beyond. The festival has also welcomed bands from Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, Georgia and the United States, reflecting the international nature of today’s goth scene.
Although the festival has grown from its original format to a twelve-band weekend, it has deliberately remained boutique in size. The emphasis has never been on becoming the biggest festival, but on presenting carefully curated lineups, creating a welcoming atmosphere and giving audiences the opportunity to discover artists they may not otherwise encounter.
The introduction of the annual ticket incentive scheme in 2025, together with payment plans and a loyal returning audience, reflects the close relationship that has developed between the festival and its community. Each September, artists and audiences return to Morecambe for another weekend celebrating the contemporary goth scene.
